Meet Your Tutor

James has been teaching guitar for over 15 years and is the head of Kirklees Guitar School, which delivers over 200 lessons each week from its studio in Denby Dale.

Alongside his in-person teaching, he helps guitarists around the world through his YouTube channel and the Kirklees Guitar School Academy, focusing on practical, real-world playing.

As well as teaching, James is an in-demand session guitarist, performing with a variety of artists across the UK and Europe.

Frequently Asked Questions

What level do I need to be to join the Lead Guitar Group?

You should already be a reasonably competent rhythm guitarist, be able to play a few pentatonic scale shapes and, most importantly, come with an open mind and a willingness to learn.

Do I need to already know how to improvise?

Not at all. If you've already dipped your toe into improvisation, we'll help you expand on what you know. If you're completely new to improvising, that's absolutely fine too, we'll help you build your skills and confidence from the ground up.

What happens during a typical class?

Classes usually contain three elements: improvisation, a technical focus and a longer-term solo study. We'll work on introducing new ideas into your improvisation, develop specific techniques through practical exercises, and study a guitar solo together to put those skills into a musical context.

Do I need to know music theory?

Some knowledge of music theory can certainly help, but it isn't essential. We'll introduce and explain the theory you need as we go.

What if I'm nervous about playing in front of other people?
Don't worry! We use Boss Katana or Positive Grid Spark NEO headphone systems, so you can practise, experiment and make mistakes without the whole room listening. It's also a friendly and welcoming group where everyone is learning together.

What equipment do I need to bring?

Just bring your electric guitar and some plectrums. We provide everything else you'll need for the session, including headphones.

How many people are in each group?

Spaces are limited to a maximum of eight guitarists per group, keeping the sessions productive while still giving you the benefits of learning alongside other players.

Can I try a class before committing?

Absolutely. We recommend booking an initial session first so you can experience the class, meet the group and see whether it's right for you. From there, we can discuss the best way to continue.
